So you got your iPhone and you really love it. Love all the features, love the great apps you can get for it, especially the ones you can find for free. Even got you list if iTunes already started for your music library. But now you’re considering changing the ringtone and possibly using one of the songs you like on iTunes. So, why do you have to pay for that song again just to have it as a ringtone? Doesn’t seem right does it?
Well, you can avoid having to pay double for a song you like. And you can do it legally too, so no worries there. You can actually use a little trick that will enable you to actually use one of your favorite songs in your iTune library as one of your ringtones. This little trick by the way will work on both Windows and MAC systems.
So, let’s get started with creating your very own ringtone for your iPhone. You’ll love the fact it will only take a few minutes of your time instead of a few dollars from your wallet. And it will be yours, your creation. That’s always nice.
First things first, let’s open up your iTunes. Once you have done that the next thing you will want to do is find the song you are looking from your library of songs in iTunes.
Once you have found the song that you think you might want to use, you are going to want to begin listening to the song and decide what part of the song that you want to use for your ringtone. A good place to start might be the chorus, since the chorus is generally the most remembered or familiar part of a song.
Next you are going to want to write down the start and stop times of this particular music clip. After you have done that you will want to go ahead and right click on the song title and you will need to click on “Get Info”.
OK, now that you have done that you will need to go further and find “Options” and then click on it. This is where you will be able to enter in the start and stop times of the music clip. Make sure that you have it in minutes and seconds like this 1:23. This is the only format that it will accept.
The next thing you will want to do is enter the end time of your ringtone in a text box that is provided next to the “Stop Time”. The ringtone should not be any longer than forty seconds in length. After you have done this simply click on the “OK” button.
Now you will want to go back to the song and right click it again and then go ahead and pick the option that says “Convert Selection to AAC”. Be patient and wait while iTunes converts the song. There will now be two versions of the song.
You will now need to click on the ringtone by right clicking and then delete it. Make sure to save the converted file by clicking on “Keep Files”.
Now you will need to find the file which will normally be saved in music – iTunes – iTunes music and then the band name and the file extension will be m4a. You will then have to change that m4a to an m4r. Easiest way to rename it is to double click it, then rename the file.
Once you have done this click on “Use .m4r”. After which you will then need to double click your ringtone file on your iPhone and then iTunes will then add it to your folder that is designated for ringtones in your music library.
Connect your iPhone and do what you normally do when you add a ringtone.
