What Twitter apps, services and plugs are we missing in the Twitter Forge?

In the Twitter forge , we are almost at 120 listings of different Twitter hacks, apps, plugs, services, mashups and related items to Twitter. If there is anything we have missed or omitted please let us know and we will get it listed here. We aim to be the best resource on Twitter and Twitter apps on the net.

Also we thought that we would take this opportunity to ask the community how we can make Twittown a better community resource. If you have any suggestions please post them in the comments below or fill out the contact form.

Thanks for your input and happy twittering!

Twitter as a Dive Log?

Thanks to Biz Stone for this link to the Ocean Doctor . They are twittering their dives and experiences aboard the "Esperanza" and their trip in the Bering Sea. They are doing deep dives using subs and then twittering! Cool to follow if you are a diver or interested in Sea / Ocean adventuring.

An idea we had from this is, why not have a dive log based on twitter. You go for your dive and then SMS the info to twitter and it somehow gets stored to a personal dive log. It would be recorded forever under your personal log (maybe on a third party website). This way you would never have a dive log book that gets lost or never have the hassle of multiple dive books again (and the consolidation hassle later on). Thoughts?

Twitter for Pictures

On the back of Twittergram , the service to send voice / audio messages over Twitter, Dave Winer is at it again. Developing more useful Twitter mashups that is.

This time his creation is called "Twitter for Pictures ". Fred Wilson at A VC is calling it Twickr . It is a mashup of Twitter and Flickr where you can send a picture to Flickr and then it automatically updates your twitter subscribers. Pretty cool.

UPDATE - Here is the actual Flickr to Twitter page , it is only in limited trial so you will need to ask Dave for a chance to try it.

LA Fire Department and Web 2.0 Technology

Here is a very interesting article over at PC World on how the LA fire department is using technology to help its operations and to communicate with the public. Twitter is one of the many projects they have on the go.

QQ Releases a Chinese Twitter Clone

The Chinese Twitter clones are rolling out the software factory doors at a frightening pace. Another new entrant is now trying to get marketshare.

TaoTao is one that has a good chance to make it. It's backers are QQ , the insanely popular messaging network. QQ is currently the number 10 website in the world (according to alexa) and at one point in time, a vast majority of the Chinese net population used QQ as their IM solution. They have millions and millions of users to say the least. If they do a good job of cross marketing they should be able to get almost instant uptake. It will also be interesting on how they integrate with their existing QQ service and mobile phones.

Does any of this Chinese stuff matter? Yes, we think so. At the end of last year there were 137 million web users in China (by official goverment accounts) and by the end of 2007 that is projected to hit 200 million. You see, soon there will be more Internet users in China than ALL OF THE PEOPLE in the USA. The stakes are high and the west doesn't have access to the market (for the most part) due to language and other barriers.

More Public Services Using Twitter for Good - American Red Cross

We have stumbled upon the American Red Cross's Twitter page today. It is really great that public services are taking up the use of new technologies so quickly.

American Red cross twitter page

There is nothing on their main web page to indicate that they are using Twitter though, we couldn't find it anyway. Maybe they need a Twitter Badge to let people know!

Are there any other public services that you know of that are using Twitter? Let us know in the comments!

UPDATE - There is more info on the service here in this blog entry .  There is two parts to the service actually.  The second part (and second twitter account) is here at twitter.com/safeandwell.  This part of the service is intended for disasters where people get lost, hurt and killed.  It will be used to locate people and families and victims can reunite or be reassured that loved ones are indeed OK.
